The 22-year-old Matt Barkley ended his college football career at USC Trojans football team and now he will be with the Philadelphia Eagles playing the 2013 new season as the team's new quarterback.
He was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with pick 98 in the 4th round in 2013 NFL draft. Lucky Matt! He begins his NFL career as a quarterback. The selection has caused quite a stir over the past two weeks. Maybe some football fans think that he is just a college boy and too young. He seemed like an odd fit for Kelly's uptempo offense. They were interesting in knowing how Barkley would fit in Chip Kelly's spread option offense. Still many were wondering how Barkley who would been a first round pick in 2012 could have fallen so far.
As for the public concerns about if he is a fit in Chip Kelly's offense, Barkley is without any stress and full of self-confidence. He said,"I'll make it fit. It doesn't matter what plays are run. I'm going to find a way to help this team out. I know Coach Kelly has a way of working things out as well in terms of how he schemes and how he calls plays. I'm not worried about how this thing turns out."
Although Barkley admitted the offensive was different from anything he's ever seen, he's embracing the challenge. "I love it. It's a new challenge. The terminology is like learning a new language in a short time period. It's the next step. I'm embracing it." He said so. And Barkley believes he can compete in any offense.
Though some people doubt him, some quite think he is promising. Trent Dilfer, the former NFL quarterback and now ESPN analyst, says he believes Barkley will be the Eagles starting quarterback for up to a decade after taking a season or two learn Kelly’s offense. He still thinks this boy could be the next Eli Manning. "There is not a lot of difference between Matt Barkley and Eli Manning in their senior film," said Dilfer. "In fact, I would argue that Matt' s college film is slightly better than Eli' s film."
Now Barkley is on the practice field at rookie minicamp for the coming new season. Seeing is believing. We'll know if he is the right person for the quarterback job very soon.
